iPhones still available everywhere

Jason Kottke points out that according to Apple's iPhone stock checker every store in the country still has iPhones in stock.

The question that comes to mind for me is this: Did Apple just do one of the most successful ultra-hyped consumer electronics launches in history, or did they overestimate the number of iPhones they would sell on day one?

UK threat level raised to critical

Following the incidents in London and Glasgow, the Home Office has raised the threat level in the UK to "Critical". This means, "an attack is expected imminently."

The UK doesn't have a color system like the US, but the threat level maps to the US system pretty closely. The UK system is shown below:

  • critical - an attack is expected imminently
  • severe - an attack is highly likely
  • substantial - an attack is a strong possibility
  • moderate - an attack is possible but not likely
  • low - an attack is unlikely

Windsor Castle

Despite the news from yesterday and today, we went out to do some sightseeing today. Jenna's parents are in town, and we all decided to go over to Windsor to see the castle.

Windsor Castle is about 900 years old, and easy to get to from London Paddington (you take a train to Slough, and then change for the Windsor train).

We had rain on and off, but really enjoyed walking around the castle. It's much more impressive than Buckingham Palace, and a real joy to walk through. On this trip we toured the state apartments and St. George's Chapel, which was undergoing renovation. So the experience at the chapel wasn't nearly as good as it could have been.

Overall, we enjoyed the trip. I didn't take any pictures due to all the rain, but plan to go back some time when the weather is better.

Passengers still stuck on the tarmac in Glasgow

BBC News 24 is reporting that passengers are still stuck on the tarmac at Glasgow airport. It's been almost four hours at this point, and there is no indication of when they are going to be allowed to deplane.

They are also reporting that Liverpool Airport is closed until further notice.

Attack in Glasgow

Today an SUV drove into the terminal of Glasgow airport and caught fire. It appears that this was another terrorist attack similar to the two bombs found in London yesterday. The Government is saying that they strongly believe that the incidents in London are connected with this new attack in today in Glasgow.

The biggest difference with the attack today is that the Glasgow police have the vehicle's driver and a passenger in custody.

The BBC is reporting that the passenger got out of the SUV, on fire himself, and attacked an approaching police officer. He was apparently subdued by a combination of police and members of the public.

According to the BBC:

"There was an Asian guy who was pulled out of the car by two police officers, who he was trying to fight off. They've got him on the ground.
Jenna and I are fine. The bombs found yesterday were close to home, but not close enough to have even the possibility of causing damage at our home or our offices. Obviously with the attack today the mood in London is tense, but we'll have to see how things go.

Bomb found in central London

Early this morning a bomb was found in central London. You can see pictures and continuing coverage on Google News.

This device was found in the Haymarket in central London. Large parts of central London were closed today, I've created a small map that shows the areas I saw closed here.

The news is currently reporting that the police have cleared Hyde Park, and are investigating another vehicle in Park lane.

Armed guards for the iPhone?

According to this AppleInsider article the first iPhones started to arrive in the states over the weekend:

Awaiting the freight at each location on Sunday were armed personnel, who were reportedly hired by Apple through its courier's ground handling agent and then cleared by the Transportation Security Administration. Armed guards are extremely unusual for freight coming out of the Asian sector, those familiar with the matter explained, and are typically reserved for shipments containing riches such as gold and diamonds.
I have images of some kind of Ocean's Eleven scheme to steal the iPhones before they are released.

Jenna is in this band that plays in Paddington Station every Friday evening.

Nifty FuturePr0n

If you like speculative future videos, then this is one of the newer examples I've seen. While I don't agree with everything in the video, it raises some interesting possibilities.
