Air security separated mother, 4-year-old
By Washington Post, 1/19/2003
WASHINGTON - When the 4-year-old daughter of Ariane Richaud set off the metal detector at Reagan National Airport here on Christmas Day, officers directed the child to a holding area with a number of men waiting to be wanded. Richaud said she was told to stand elsewhere.
The child became distressed and began to cry. Richaud, of Woodbridge, Va., said she could barely see her daughter, 10 to 15 feet away behind a plexiglass wall, for what she estimated was about 10 minutes.
''I got emotional,'' Richaud said. ''I didn't cuss or anything, but I did raise my voice, and asked them why they couldn't wand her first, or let me be with her.'' The agents, she said, told her that they were awaiting a female agent, and that if she didn't calm down, they would take her to jail.
